TIOBE Index for July 2019: Perl is one of the victims of Python’s hype

The TIOBE Programming Community index is a measure of the popularity of programming languages. The list is updated monthly and is based on the number of global technical engineers, courses, and third-party vendors. Including popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube, and Baidu are all used for index calculations. The specific calculation method can be found here. It’s worth noting that the TIOBE index doesn’t mean the language is good or bad. Developers can use the list to check if their programming skills need to be updated or to choose a language when starting to build new software.

The IOBE programming language rankings have been announced in July. The top ten are Java, C, Python, C++, C#, Visual Basic .NET, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, and assembly language. The difference from last month is that C# has surpassed the ranking of Visual Basic .NET with a slight advantage and re-entered TOP 5. Compared with last month, Python’s index has increased a lot, from 8.530% to 9.260%.

TIOBE believes that Python is becoming more and more popular, but it has also led to a decline in the popularity of other programming languages, including Perl and R. In particular, Perl is more affected. Perl is now in the 19th place on the TIOBE list (R is the 20th), which is the lowest ever. Be aware that Perl took third place in 2005 when its Ratings index exceeded 10%.

The Perl language is used in a wide range of applications. In addition to CGI, Perl is used in graphics programming, systems management, network programming, finance, biology, and other fields. Because of its flexibility, Perl is known as the “Swiss Army Knife” in the scripting language.
