The side fingerprint recognition function of the iPad Air 4 is a great engineering feat

Apple iPad has only two biometric methods, one is Face ID facial recognition and the other is Touch ID fingerprint recognition. The Touch ID has always been on the front of the device. However, the newly released iPad Air 4 breaks this. The design convention is to put fingerprint recognition on the frame for the first time and integrate it with the power button.

In fact, Apple may not think that side fingerprint recognition is better than Face ID or front fingerprint recognition, and then decided to use side fingerprint recognition, but because the iPad Air 4 adopts a new full-screen design, there is not enough space on the front. Put a Home button to realize the front fingerprint recognition, and the use of Face ID will increase the cost of the product, and the higher the price will affect the sales.

After the release of the iPad Air 4, Apple’s management team also accepted some media interviews as usual. When Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus and vice president of product marketing Bob Borchers talked about why the iPad Air 4 uses side fingerprint recognition, they said that because they want to adopt a full-screen design, they need to find other places to put the fingerprint recognition sensor.

(On adding Touch ID to the home button). It is an incredible feat of engineering to achieve that fingerprint sensor with all the capacity and security in a new format.

The challenge was getting this incredibly sensitive touch ID sensor into an incredibly sensitive antenna, and we had to figure out how to get them to work together and prevent them from “talking” to each other causing interference.
