Spotify tells iOS platform subscribers to no longer pay through Apple’s channels

Recently, Spotify has begun issuing notifications to its paid subscribers on the iOS platform, declaring the cessation of the in-app Apple payment method for subscription services.

After the final billing cycle of the current subscription service, users who initially subscribed to Spotify via the in-app Apple payment method will be automatically converted to the ad-supported free version. To continue utilizing the paid service, these users must re-subscribe after transitioning to the free version.

Previously, Spotify has informed new users they could circumvent the extra Apple revenue share charges by subscribing directly via the official website instead of through the app. Despite Apple’s subsequent reduction of the revenue share calculation, Spotify maintains that this arrangement remains unfair to both themselves and the consumers.

On the Android platform, Google offers a third-party payment option for subscription services like Spotify, providing users with a broader range of payment channels. This move is designed to alleviate controversies over revenue sharing within apps.
