Ryzen 7 7840S appears on the AMD driver support list
The recent unveiling of the AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 23.7.2 driver brings with it support for the Ryzen 7040 series APU based on the Zen 4 architecture. AMD had previously faced a barrage of criticism from users due to its protracted delay in releasing public drivers for the new RDNA 3 architecture integrated graphics.
The hardware support list for the AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 23.7.2 driver encompasses a staggering 517 devices, including PCI device IDs and sub-IDs. This broad spectrum encompasses the Radeon RX 7000 series of desktop and mobile graphics cards, the Ryzen 7045 series codenamed “Dragon Range”, and the Ryzen 7040U/HS series codenamed “Phoenix”. Surprisingly absent, however, is the Ryzen Z1 series used in the ASUS ROG Ally handheld.
According to a report by VideoCardz, new models have surfaced on the hardware support list, such as the Ryzen 7 7840S. Speculation suggests this could be a product employing the “Phoenix” chip but with the integrated graphics component disabled, perhaps an upgraded version of the previous 4700S kit.
The AMD 4700S kit, a derivative of the custom SoC developed for the Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console, had its integrated graphics deactivated upon its release roughly two years prior. It employs a Zen 2 architecture CPU, boasting 8 cores and 16 threads per core, with each core featuring 32KB of L1 data cache and L1 instruction cache, 512KB of L2 cache, and each CCX equipped with 4MB of L3 cache. Its peak acceleration frequency reaches 4.0 GHz. Accompanied by the AMD A77E FCH southbridge chip, it also comes equipped with 16GB of onboard GDDR6 memory.
Whether AMD is indeed preparing the Ryzen 7 7840S kit for an impending launch remains to be seen.
