Mat Piscatella released the latest game console and game sales data, showing that PlayStation 5 became the best-selling game console in the United States in October, followed by Xbox Series X/S. However, compared to the same period last year, hardware sales in October 2022 fell by 10% to $424 million, but both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S had double-digit growth, only offset by declining sales on other platforms.
The report pointed out that PlayStation 5 ranked first in terms of sales volume and total sales amount, and Xbox Series X/S ranked second in both indicators. In fact, the recent strong sales of PlayStation 5 are not limited to the United States. In Europe, it once again defeated Nintendo Switch after a year and regained the top position.
Sony has previously said that as of the end of September, global shipments of the PlayStation 5 game console had reached 25 million units, and in the most recent quarter which ended September 30, a total of 6.5 million units were produced and plans to sell more than 18 million units by the end of this fiscal year (ending March 31, 2023). As the supply shortage in the semiconductor industry eases, the supply of PlayStation 5 is gradually increasing, and with the Christmas holiday approaching, Sony is likely to further increase sales.
In terms of accessories, sales in October fell 8% year-on-year to $148 million, with the PlayStation 5’s DualSense wireless handle being the best-selling accessory. Total hardware and accessory sales for the first ten months of 2022 are about $4.3 billion, roughly flat year-over-year. In terms of game sales, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Gotham Knights topped the list.
