Mozilla is revising the Firefox UI and plans to announce the new design in May
Mozilla developer mconley submitted a meta bug report called “Proton – Firefox visual refresh” two months ago. He said that he is investigating and modifying the Firefox UI. This meta bug was submitted to track this work.
However, the meta bug does not provide more information about the UI, nor does it have renderings or screenshots. It only mentions that it will modernize multiple elements of Firefox. These elements include:
- proton-foundations
- proton-address-bar
- proton-toolbar
- proton-tabs-bar
- proton-hamburger-menu
- proton-infobars
- proton-door-hangers
- proton-modals
- 1680076
- proton-context-menus
In fact, when Mozilla released Firefox 75 last year, it began to test the user’s acceptance of modifying the UI. At that time, they made major changes to the address bar, which caused a lot of controversies.
The developer Sören Hentzschel revealed on the blog that he saw the design of the new UI and said that the development work is still in the early stages. Mozilla has created multiple renderings of different designs. It is not clear whether these renderings will be applied to the new UI. He also mentioned that Mozilla will introduce many improvements to enhance the user experience, such as displaying vertical labels in compact mode.
Mozilla plans to announce some of the new designs when Firefox 89 is released, and its release date is tentatively scheduled for May 18, 2021.
