Microsoft MSIX packaging solution, unified Windows package format

At the Windows Developers Day Summit on March 8 this year, Microsoft announced that it would introduce a new MSIX file package format. At yesterday’s Ignite 2018 Annual Conference, Microsoft again mentioned MSIX and outlined its follow-up features and roadmap.

MSIX is an application packaging solution designed to replace all old packaging solutions such as MSI, App-V, and more. It can also replace the Desktop App Converter, which is currently used to package Win32 apps and put them into the  Microsoft Store. Applications packaged with MSIX can also be easily installed and uninstalled, no garbage left after uninstallation, and can be easily incrementally updated. MSIX SDK is an open source.

MSIX is also a package format, and if you change a file to a ZIP file, you can see everything it contains. Microsoft said it would support the package starting with Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

At the meeting, Microsoft announced that MSIX would also support Windows 7 and 8.1. As for some older versions of Windows 10, it is also possible. Also plans to add support for Windows (NT), but must wait until next year’s Windows 10 1903 (19H1) version. Microsoft will further integrate MSIX and System Center ConfigMgr and Intune and extend the Package Support Framework library to make MSIX even more powerful.
