Microsoft decides to skip Microsoft Exchange Server 2022 and go straight to version 2025

Microsoft Exchange Server is an enterprise mail server launched by Microsoft. According to Microsoft’s original plan, after the release of Microsoft Exchange Server 2016/2019, the new version will be released in the second half of 2021, which is Microsoft Exchange Server 2022.

However, in March 2021, Exchange Server was found to have multiple vulnerabilities and a large number of attackers actively exploited these vulnerabilities to launch attacks. Microsoft had to spend a lot of extra time fixing bugs and urging businesses to upgrade now. In fact, there are still companies that fail to fix vulnerabilities in a timely manner, resulting in security weaknesses. Because of the security problem, Microsoft also failed to release the Exchange Server 2022 version in the second half of 2021, Microsoft is not ready to release a new version.

In fact, after consideration, Microsoft has decided to skip the Exchange Server 2022 version and release the Exchange Server 2025 version instead. Specifically, the release time may be sometime in the second half of 2024. At that time, Microsoft will notify enterprises in advance of the release plan, pricing, features, branding, and requirements of the new version. Of course, if there is no accident, the brand should be the Exchange Server 2025 version. “We are moving the next version of Exchange Server to our Modern Lifecycle Policy, which has no end of support dates. We plan on continuing to support Exchange Server as long as there is substantive market demand,” officials said.

Exchange Server 2016/2019 will reach end-of-life on October 14, 2025, and will no longer receive security updates, which Microsoft and enterprises can easily migrate to Exchange Server 2025.

As for the current version, Microsoft emphasizes that Exchange Server 2019 has received a series of improvements and features that will be available as a major release for at least the next three years.
