MediaTek released the new flagship TV chip Pentonic 1000: Support 4K 120Hz, Wifi 6E

MediaTek has released a new flagship chip for TVs: the Pentonic 1000. MediaTek says they designed the Pentonic 1000 specifically to accommodate today’s smart TV trends, including 4K streaming, cloud gaming, video conferencing, and viewing parties.

Pentonic 1000 has a multi-core CPU, dual-core GPU, integrated MEMC function, and supports a 4K 120Hz refresh rate. AI-Super Resolution (AI-SR) technology provided by a dedicated AI processing unit (APU) can provide edge smoothing and detail reconstruction, making FHD look like 4K. Two other AI-Picture Quality (AI-PQ) Scene Recognition and AI-PQ Object Recognition technologies enhance image quality for lifelike depth perception that brings content to life.

Thanks to the independent decoding unit, Pentonic 1000 also has powerful decoding performance, not only supporting common HEVC, VP9, AV1, ATSC3.0, and AVS3 but also supporting H.266 decoding. The H.266 standard was released in 2020 and is mainly used for streaming media in 8K and 4K resolutions. Compared with H.265, the volume of the video can be compressed by half.

The Pentonic 1000 was also designed with home entertainment in mind. The Pentonic 1000 supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) technology, which can reach up to 144Hz in games. In addition, the chip also supports ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), which can bring a better experience to gamers.

In other respects, the Pentonic 1000 supports Wifi 6E, the chip supports HDMI2.1 at the same time, the maximum transmission bandwidth is 48Gbps, supports voice assistants, and connects smart homes, and Dolby Atmos immersive sound effects.

We designed the MediaTek Pentonic 1000 specifically to accommodate today’s smart TV trends, including 4K streaming, cloud gaming, video conferencing and watch parties,” said Alex Chen, General Manager of the TV Business Unit at MediaTek. “With support for 4K HDR content, 120Hz frame rates, MEMC, AI enhancements, Wi-Fi 6/6E connectivity and cutting-edge codecs like VVC, Pentonic 1000 will deliver the ultimate 4K viewing experience.

According to MediaTek, the first smart TVs powered by Pentonic 1000 will be available in the first quarter of 2023.
