Linus Torvalds mistakes the time and place of the kernel maintainer summit
This year’s Kernel Maintainers Summit was initially scheduled to be held in Vancouver, Canada on November 12th, but Linux kernel maintainer Linus Torvalds made a mistake in the timing of the summit, and even more, unfortunately, he has planned to go on holiday with his family during the week of the summit.
On the Linux Foundation mailing list, kernel maintainer Theodore Y. Ts’o said that the organiser and Linus discussed two options:
- Continue to hold the Kernel Maintainers Summit in Vancouver without Linus
- In the case of Linus, the summit was changed to Edinburgh, Scotland, in parallel with the Open Source Europe Summit
Linus suggested choosing the first option. The maintainer summit without Linus would be an interesting experiment, but the organiser’s consensus is that changing to Edinburgh will be a better option. This means that this year’s core summit will be held in Edinburgh on the afternoon of October 22.
Finally, Linus accepted these two choices, which means that the Vancouver Core Summit will open as usual, but Linus will not show up. The conference mainly discusses technical issues. The scale of the small-scale meeting on October 22 is primarily for the future development when Linus will attend.
On behalf of the organisers, Theodore Y. Ts’o apologised for the inconvenience caused to the participants. Some people speculate that Linus may be intentional.
