Google is working on a new search service code-named Magi

The New York Times reports that Google is developing a search engine, codenamed “Magi”, which incorporates artificial intelligence technology. Additionally, it includes a search feature for the Chrome browser to help users quickly extract webpage highlights, as well as an automatic image generator called “GIFI” and a language-learning tool similar to Duolingo, codenamed “Tivoli Tutor.”

Previously, Google revealed that it had been working on multiple AI technology application projects, including the chatbot “Bard,” with more AI-integrated projects set to be announced.

According to information obtained by the New York Times, the new search engine service, codenamed “Magi,” aims to compete against Microsoft’s collaboration with OpenAI, which combines ChatGPT technology with Bing Search services. By utilizing AI computation methods, users will find more appropriate search results and answers.

Google has already assigned over 160 employees to related research and development work, including allowing users to search for music content through chatbots, find corresponding search content, and even respond to software coding issues, automatically generating correct program code.

Additionally, Google appears to be developing a feature for the Chrome browser called “Searchalong,” which uses chatbots to help organize the content of the current webpage. For example, when a user is viewing an Airbnb page, they can ask the chatbot to plan accommodations based on their intended destination and departure time.

Other projects include “GIFI,” which automatically generates images using Google’s image search service, and “Tivoli Tutor,” which offers cross-language learning interaction, similar to Duolingo’s service.

Google may announce “Magi” as early as next month during Google I/O 2023, with more features expected to be revealed in the fall. Initially, only about one million people within the United States may have access to test the “Magi” functionality, with the number of testers anticipated to increase to 30 million by the end of the year.

As Microsoft has recently made significant advancements in search engine technology and is starting to compete with Google in the browser market, along with rumors of Samsung potentially switching its default search engine to Microsoft’s service, Google must develop its search engine technology to attract more users.
