Gigabyte says AMD will launch a new generation of desktop processors later this year
Although AMD introduced the 65W Ryzen 7000 processors and the Ryzen 7000X3D earlier this year, this may not represent the entirety of AMD’s desktop market plans for the year, as they may launch a new generation of Ryzen processors by year-end.
This information was mentioned by Gigabyte in their announcement for their new entry-level 1U E133-C10 and R133-C10 servers, which feature the AM5 socket and support AMD Ryzen 7000 processors for edge computing and general-purpose workloads. However, they did not specify which Ryzen 7000 processors were used, especially considering that AMD has not yet released the commercial Ryzen 7000 Pro or a counterpart to Intel’s Xeon E series.
In an intriguing statement toward the end of the announcement, Gigabyte revealed that AMD’s AM5 platform support would extend at least until 2025 and that later this year, AMD would introduce a new generation of AMD Ryzen desktop processors on the AM5 platform. It is currently unclear what this refers to; based on AMD’s product roadmap, the Zen 5 architecture is not expected to debut until 2024. Nonetheless, since AMD released their last product in September of the previous year, it is not impossible for them to launch the Ryzen 8000 this year, though it remains uncertain what that would entail. If there were to be any new product, it would most likely involve bringing the mobile platform’s Phoenix to the desktop, possibly in the form of a Ryzen 7000G series APU.
Additionally, Intel is unlikely to make any significant moves in the desktop market this year, as the Meteor Lake-S has essentially been scrapped and replaced with the Raptor Lake Refresh. This means that there will not be a new platform, with the desktop market leaping directly to Arrow Lake-S. However, this transition is not expected to occur until next year.
