China’s four major mobile phone manufacturers join forces against Google Play Store
At present, the four major mobile phone manufacturers in China (Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo) are jointly forming a platform called the Global Developer Service Alliance (GDSA). This platform is designed to help developers outside China apply their applications at once. It means that apps and games are uploaded to the four major vendors’ own app stores. At present, developers who want to upload their own apps to various app stores still need to manually operate again and again.
“This will be an important step for Chinese brands as they look to reduce dependence on Google and more so US companies in light of the US-China trade war and fear of cutting access to leading technologies,” said Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah.
Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have already accounted for 40.1% of global mobile phone shipments in the most recent quarter. People familiar with the matter said that the platform will be launched in March this year and it is expected to cover 9 regions and countries including India, Indonesia, and Russia.
