Apple joins the open source Data Transfer Project
Apple joined an open-source project to allow data portability, Data Transfer Project (DTP). Launched in 2018, Data Transfer Project is a collaboration between Google and Microsoft, Twitter and Facebook to create an open-source service-to-service data portability platform that makes it easy for its website users and others to One platform migrates to another. It provides a common framework and ecosystem that accepts the contributions of service providers to enable seamless data transfer between services.
Data Transfer Project provides an interface to a small set of standardized data formats that can be converted from any service’s proprietary API while using data such as OAuth for data transfer. Current prototypes already support data transfer for multiple vertical products: photos, mail, contacts, calendars, and tasks. These are implemented through the existing public APIs of Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, Remember the Milk and Smugmug.
By joining DTP, Apple will create a new system that will allow users to add and delete data for iCloud, similar to Google Takeout and Facebook Access Your Information tools. The ultimate goal of DTP is to make data transfer easily and freely between services.
