Apple ditches mini-LED screen for new 11-inch iPad Pro

Apple is about to launch a new iPad Pro with a slew of upgrades and different internals. According to Wccftech, Apple has given up on equipping the new 11-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED screen and will still only use it on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Some users are holding money to buy the new iPad Pro, one of the reasons is to wait for the 11-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED screen, and now it seems to be disappointing. There have been rumors in the past that Apple will expand the mini-LED screen to other iPad models, including the new 11-inch iPad Pro, and I don’t know why the plan was shelved.

In addition, the new generation of iPad Pro will be upgraded to Apple’s latest self-developed chip M2. It is manufactured using the second-generation 5nm process (N5P) and consists of 20 billion transistors, 25% more than the M1 chip; under the 8-core design consisting of 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, the CPU performance is improved by 18%; the number of GPU cores is increased to 10, and the GPU performance is increased by 35%; the number of neural engine cores is 16, and the speed of the neural engine is increased by 40%.

The mini-LED screen is not the focus of the iPad model. In the future, Apple will eventually transition to OLED technology, but related products will not be seen until 2024. Apple may choose iPad Pro models to use OLED screens first in 2024. It has been reported before that Apple’s iPad product line will gradually transition to OLED screens, which may use Hybrid OLED technology, which means OLED panels that mix rigid OLED panels and flexible OLED panel technologies. Samsung and LG are currently working on this.

The substrate materials of rigid OLED panels and flexible OLED panels are different. The former is glass and the latter is plastic, mainly polyimide, which will be encapsulated for protection. Hybrid OLED technology will use glass substrates for rigid OLED panels, as well as thin-film encapsulation of flexible OLED panels. This is related to the manufacturing process of flexible OLED panels, and it will become more prominent on tablets and laptops in the 10-inch to 20-inch range.
