AMD released the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards based on the new generation RDNA 3 architecture GPU on November 3. The former has 6144 stream processors, 24GB of GDDR6 video memory, and a power consumption of 355W. The latter has 5376 stream processors, uses 20GB GDDR6 memory, and consumes 300W of power. Both graphics cards have been officially listed on December 13.
According to previous reports, some users reported that the junction temperature of the Radeon RX 7900XTX can easily reach 110 degrees in high-load scenarios such as 4K games. The user tried to increase the fan speed of the graphics card to full speed, but there was still a frequency reduction. Finally, the user applied for a return and refund but was rejected by AMD.
“
We are aware that a limited number of users are experiencing unexpected thermal throttling on AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards (reference models made by AMD). Users experiencing unexpected thermal throttling of an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX should contact AMD Support,” stated AMD in a statement to
Tom’s Hardware.
The junction temperature is the actual operating temperature of the semiconductor in the electronic device. It is called “Junction temperature” in AMD’s official driver and shows the internal temperature of the GPU. The junction temperature is generally 15-25 degrees higher than the conventional graphics card temperature. Previously, the upper limit of the junction temperature set by AMD for the RX 5700 graphics card was 110 degrees.
According to AMD, 110 degrees is the normal junction temperature of the Radeon RX 7900XTX. At present, it is suspected that the uneven contact pressure from the cold plate will cause the overheating problem of the graphics card. Some users say that re-pasting or replacing the thermal pad is a feasible solution. The AMD team is investigating this issue, and PowerColor is collecting user feedback to assist with the investigation.
AMD has not given a specific date for solving the problem, and some users have reportedly returned their Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards.
