AMD confirms continued support for the AM4 platform

At Computex 2022, AMD CEO Dr. LiSa Su introduced the upcoming Zen 4 architecture Ryzen 7000 series processors and the corresponding AM5 platform. Of course, it will take several months to buy a new generation of processors, and the official release time is this fall.

There is no doubt that the AM5 platform has new technical features such as DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, and has stronger performance, but in the future, the mature Zen 3 architecture and AM4 platform can still meet the needs of a considerable number of users, and the construction cost lower. For AMD, the AM4 platform has achieved great success. After five years of multiple architectures and process nodes, even the earliest 300 series motherboards still have firmware updates in the near future, and can even support the latest Ryzen 7 5800X3D processors.

In fact, in this keynote speech, Dr. LiSa Su said that her partners have developed more than 500 AM4 motherboards, which will continue to be supported for years to come with driver updates and possible applications and new technologies, AMD will continue to ship Zen 2 architecture processors this year, and there may be new Zen 3 architecture processors at some point, or move some products to mainstream positioning to provide consumers and enterprises with more choices and low-cost solutions, and Zen 4 architecture processors will occupy the high-end market.

Dr. LiSa Su’s remarks and wordings aroused speculation. Although AMD’s thoughts cannot be fully explained, it is generally believed that the AM4 platform may exist for a longer time than expected. For most consumers, especially some old users, it is still beneficial to continue the life cycle of the AM4 platform and provide corresponding technical support at this stage.
