ADATA Demonstrates Next Generation Memory Modules, Including CAMM, CXL and MR-DIMM

Throughout the preceding years, myriad novel memory module standards have emerged for various applications, presenting both challenges and opportunities for manufacturers. As per TomsHardware, Adata demonstrated several next-generation memory modules intended for client and server applications at this year’s Computex 2023, including CAMM, CXL, and MR-DIMM modules.

CAMM, standing for “Compression Attached Memory Module,” is anticipated to have its specifications finalized in the latter half of 2023. Originating from Dell, it aspires to replace traditional SO-DIMM memory slots, boasting a 57% reduction in thickness and the capacity to carry 128GB on a single side. By simplifying wiring and reducing latency, it facilitates a sleeker design for laptops without compromising performance, all the while rendering maintenance more convenient.

The CAMM modules showcased by Adata bear considerable distinctions from those currently utilized by Dell, possibly owing to the latter’s usage of designs predating the confirmation of JEDEC standards.

Adata also presented storage devices compliant with CXL 1.1 standards, equipped with a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface, and adopting the E3.S form factor. Furnished with 3D NAND flash, these devices can be employed to extend server system memory, leveraging PCIe modules to enable relatively cost-effective system memory expansion.

Another module targeting servers displayed by Adata at the exhibition is the MR-DIMM, short for Multi-Ranked Buffered DIMMs, which essentially amalgamates two DDR5 DIMMs to offer double the data transfer rate. This product of the collaboration between AMD and JEDEC is expected to be implemented in next-generation server platforms.

Contrasted with existing DDR5 DIMMs, the new memory modules will exhibit a significant leap in terms of bandwidth, commencing at 8400 MT/s and aiming for a target rate of 17600 MT/s. Regarding capacity, Adata offers a selection of 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 192GB products.
