Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 will reach end of service on January 14, 2020
For many years, the platform ecology of Windows 10 Mobile has been unsatisfactory. In the past year, it has hardly seen any functional updates and user interface upgrades. Microsoft also persuaded Windows 10 Mobile users to use the Android or iOS platform quickly. Because Microsoft can at least guarantee that Microsoft products on these two platforms will always be updated.
This month, Microsoft released the final cumulative update for Windows 10 Mobile and also confirmed that it officially stopped updating support for Windows 10 Mobile. This time also shows that Windows 10 Mobile is coming to an end and will never get any updates.
What was unexpected was that Microsoft quietly announced last Friday that it would extend the end of support for Windows 10 Mobile by one month, which was originally scheduled to officially stop security support on December 10, 2019.
According to Microsoft’s updated Windows 10 Mobile documentation, Microsoft is currently planning to officially stop supporting Windows 10 Mobile on January 14, 2020. After January, Microsoft will no longer provide security patches for Windows 10 Mobile, and this may cause issues such as the security of Windows 10 Mobile devices after January 14 next year.
The Microsoft documentation states:
Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 will reach end of service on January 14, 2020. Devices running Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates that contain protection from the latest security threats.
It’s not clear why Microsoft extended support for Windows 10 Mobile, but for now, the decision has made Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 7 SP1 end-of-support dates consistent.
