UK government plans to invest £100m to drive its own AI solutions
The UK government recently announced an investment of £100 million in the novel “Foundation Model Taskforce,” aiming to establish globally competitive artificial intelligence solutions while collaborating with the industry to make AI technologies more reliable and secure.
The members of the “Foundation Model Taskforce” are expected to be announced this summer, and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, they will report directly to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Technology Minister Michelle Donelan.
As most AI technologies currently promoted in the market originate from the United States and other countries, the UK government hopes to strengthen its competitiveness in this field by developing its own AI capabilities and maintaining a degree of control.
Additionally, due to the inherent uncertainties in AI technologies, such as the veracity of automatically generated content and the potential for biased recommendations, the UK government aims to construct its own AI systems to mitigate privacy, ethical, and security concerns.
