Ubuntu 16.04 LTS reached EOL, users can upgrade to ESM version to continue to receive security updates
The Ubuntu 16.04 LTS version released in 2016 has reached the end of life. The developer Canonical recommends that all users who are still using this version migrate to the supported LTS version as soon as possible because users who still use 16.04 LTS after the end of support will not be able to get security updates.
Ubuntu itself is an open-source and free operating system, but Canonical provides additional extended support for some enterprise-level users who need it, that is, if the enterprise cannot migrate to a supported new version and is planning to continue using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and want to improve security, you can pay Canonical for security updates.
Moreover, there are free quotas for extended support and maintenance. Among them, individual users can use Ubuntu 16.04 ESM on three computers, which is the extended support maintenance version. If companies need to run this version on more computers, they need to pay Canonical.
Canonical stated that with the Ubuntu 16.04 ESM version, customers will get basic security support for the Ubuntu operating system and support for horizontally expanded infrastructure. When security vulnerabilities occur, Canonical will make and release security updates in a timely manner. Vulnerabilities are repaired.
It should be emphasized that the Ubuntu 16.04 ESM version only supports 64-bit x86 computers, and 32-bit and other architecture computers do not support the ESM version for the time being. In addition, the ESM version can be supported for an additional 3 to 5 years, but Canonical recommends that users upgrade to a new supported version as soon as possible.
