Intel executives talked about the current shortages in the supply chain

A hot topic in the current semiconductor industry is the shortage of supply. In the past few months, it has spread to all parts of the supply chain. According to Anandtech, Intel Chief Revenue Officer Michelle Johnston Holthaus explained the situation at the “Partner Connect 2021” conference held by Intel a few days ago. He pointed out that the supply chain for personal computers is currently in short supply. In addition to substrates, Wi-Fi modules and display panels are also involved, so even with a processor in hand, it may not be possible to install a complete set of computers. Intel will work with partners to promote the resolution of related issues and increase investment. Although Intel also aims at vertical integration, it is still constrained by parts of the supply chain that it cannot control.

In addition, Maurits Tichelman, general manager of Intel Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said that overall, the situation in 2021 is better than in 2020. The supply low in 2021 will be in May, which will be the most difficult time of the year, and then the situation will gradually improve in the second half of the year. The key factor is still the production capacity of substrates.

Intel has announced that it will invest 3.5 billion U.S. dollars in the state of New Mexico in the United States to upgrade the original fab, the main purpose of which is for chip packaging and testing. The new plant will use Intel’s new 3D packaging technology, also known as Foveros. The new expansion project will start at the end of 2021 and complete production preparations before the end of 2022.
