The Steam app is coming to ChromeOS
Google announced at the Games Developer Summit that Steam will come to ChromeOS later, and some ChromeOS users will soon have the opportunity to test it. In this presentation, Greg Hartell, director of gaming products at Google, announced that the Steam app Alpha version has just been available on select Chromebooks, and let viewers go to Chromebook’s community forums to watch more detailed content. However, after that, Google released a statement on the forum, saying that the Alpha version of Steam will not meet you for a while.
As you may have already heard, our team is working with Valve to bring Steam to Chrome OS. We are very excited to share that we’ll be landing an early, alpha-quality version of Steam on Chrome OS in the Dev channel for a small set of Chromebooks coming soon. Please come back to the forum for more information!
Back in early 2020, Google had announced that it was preparing to bring Steam support to Chromebooks, and then there wasn’t much news. During this period, there have been some rumors that Steam will soon be on ChromeOS, and there have been recent reports that Google is developing a Chromebook mainly for gaming.
This speech also mentioned Google’s plan for its cloud game service Stadia, that is, it will launch a free Demo and trial version, and will also optimize it for developers to use.
