The revenue of the top ten IC design companies in 2021 will exceed $100 billion

Recently, TrendForce released the latest research report, which shows that in 2021, due to the shortage of chips, the global IC industry will see a serious shortage of supply. Coupled with rising chip prices, the top 10 global IC design companies’ 2021 revenue will reach $127.4 billion, an increase of 48% year on year.

There are several changes in 2021 compared to the 2020 rankings, including Nvidia surpassing Broadcom and rising to second place, second only to Qualcomm; Novatek and Realtek rose to sixth and eighth positions respectively; Dialog was acquired by Renesas Electronics, and the original tenth position was replaced by Himax.

Qualcomm continued to maintain its No. 1 position in the world, with its mobile phone SoC and IoT chip sales increasing by 51% and 63% year-on-year, respectively, while RF and automotive chip revenue also increased by 51%, diversification is the key to driving Qualcomm’s revenue growth; Nvidia continues to integrate hardware and software, showing its determination to create a “comprehensive computing platform,” with annual revenue growth rates of 64% and 59% for the gaming graphics card and data center businesses, respectively; Broadcom benefited from the stable sales growth of network chips, broadband communication chips, storage, and bridge chips, and its revenue increased by 18% year-on-year; MediaTek’s mobile SoC strategy worked, resulting in a 61% year-on-year increase in annual revenue; AMD’s computer and graphics revenue grew 45% year over year, thanks to strong sales growth of Ryzen CPUs and Radeon GPUs, as well as higher average prices, accelerating business demand in the cloud led to a 113% increase in annual revenue in the enterprise, embedded, and semi-custom segments, which resulted in a 68% increase in annual revenue; Realtek’s steady growth in audio and Bluetooth chips, while higher demand for its networking and business laptop product lines drove overall results, with revenue up 43% year over year.

Rising demand for high-spec products in high-performance computing, networking, automotive, and industrial applications has created good business opportunities for IC design companies that will drive overall revenue growth. Still, rising foundry costs, geopolitical uncertainty, and rising inflation will hamper global economic growth and affect an already exhausted consumer electronics market. How to maintain the product sales momentum within the existing capacity range will be the difficult problem and challenges faced by these IC design companies in 2022.
