In order to get out of the predicament in the early years, AMD sold a lot of semiconductor facilities. For example, the current GlobalFoundries is AMD’s original fab. AMD’s original packaging and testing facilities were sold to Tongfu Microelectronics in a joint venture and cooperation model. In recent years, AMD has had a very good development momentum, but with it comes a huge demand for production capacity.
According to
theedgemarkets reports, semiconductor company TF AMD Microelectronics (Penang) Sdn Bhd is building a new RM2b factory in the Batu Kawan Industrial Park, Malaysia, covering an area of 139,000 square meters, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023. AMD executive vice-president, chief financial officer, and treasurer Datuk Devinder Kumar said AMD has come a long way over the past few years, and TF AMD has played a key role in supporting its growth as a strategic supplier and partner.
AMD is currently focusing on small chip design, and it is expected that the new factory will further expand its chip packaging business and become the key to future competitive products. It is said that the RM2b factory will create more than 3,000 jobs covering advanced semiconductor engineering, design, and process fields to address various high-performance computing solutions.
“Demand is still strong because demand for computing continues to grow globally. I hope the investment we are making will help with the supply situation and it will probably get resolved in one or two years,” he added.
