Squarespace to take over 10 million domain names from Google Domains

Squarespace, a provider of website-building tools, web hosting, and blog platform services, recently announced its acquisition of all assets belonging to Google Domains. Approximately 10 million domain names, initially procured through Google Domains, are scheduled to be migrated to Squarespace’s services subsequently.

Squarespace has committed to facilitating a seamless transition for existing Google Domains customers, asserting that it will offer comparable service provisions. However, it is presently unclear if this includes prior assurances from Google Domains about maintaining stable domain usage pricing. Yet, it is anticipated that Squarespace will present more inducements to retain original Google Domains customers.

In related statements, Squarespace has emphasized that it will continue to assist existing customers in purchasing domains from Google, whilst also helping them obtain resources for Workspace’s paid subscription service, thereby ensuring current user benefits remain unaffected.

Google Domains, which was launched on June 13, 2014, exited its beta version testing phase on March 15, 2022, to become an official service under Google. It principally offers domain name registration, DNS hosting, dynamic DNS, domain forwarding, and email forwarding. Additionally, it provides domain privacy protection, custom name server settings, and Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) capabilities.

The transaction is projected to be completed by the end of this year, with pertinent business adjustments to be further confirmed no sooner than next year.
