Sony PlayStation 5 supply shortage will continue until 2022
Recently, Sony said that due to the shortage of semiconductors and other components, the PlayStation 5 will still be in short supply until 2022, and its game console sales target will be limited.
“I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” Sony’s CFO apparently secretly told investors.
“We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily,” Totoki said.
Sony said in its earnings report in late April that since its launch last year, PlayStation 5 has sold 7.8 million units as of March 31, and plans to sell at least 14.8 million units in the current fiscal year. Although this sales figure is higher than the level of the PlayStation 4 in the same time period after its release, it is still difficult to meet market demand. Moreover, in the face of supply shortages that are common in the industry, such sales results are even harder to come by.
Sony told analysts at a press conference after the earnings report that it is a challenge to keep up with strong demand. PS5 has been difficult to keep inventory since its release in November last year, partly because of the shortage of parts such as semiconductors.
