Sony plans to launch PlayStation 5 Pro between 2023 and 2024

Sony generally begins to improve the design after a period of time after the release of the next-generation game console. In most cases, the size will be reduced, and CPUs and GPUs manufactured by new processes will be used to reduce costs and power consumption. It was previously reported that there may be a new version of PlayStation 5 in the second or third quarter of 2022. Its customized SoC will be manufactured on a 6nm process from the 7nm of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Such news is not surprising.

According to Wccftech, Sony plans to launch a more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro at some point from 2023 to 2024, which will use the new AMD custom SoC. Pricing is between $600 and $700 for the needs of the high-end 4K and 8K resolution gaming market. In addition to the PlayStation 4 Slim with a new manufacturing process and a reduced appearance, PlayStation 4 also launched a performance-enhanced PlayStation 4 Pro. Due to the longer cycle of the game console, the performance may not keep up with the needs of game development, and the higher resolution of the TV also requires stronger functional support. Competitor Microsoft also took the same approach, Xbox One was replaced by Xbox One X/S, and started a route of performance differentiation on the same generation of game consoles.

What’s different from what PlayStation 4 Pro did at the time is that PlayStation 5 Pro may have a greater leap in performance. It is rumored that Sony may choose a new CPU and GPU architecture, and use TSMC’s 5nm process manufacturing, TDP will exceed 300W. Compared with the 6nm or 7nm process, the cost of a 5nm process node is much higher. PlayStation 5 Pro will make full use of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology to adapt to 8K resolution games.
