Sony develops new data compression technology to greatly reduce the game file size
PlayStation 5 is a very popular next-generation game console. From the sales for more than half a year after its release, it can be seen that gamers love it. Of course, PlayStation 5 is not perfect. Many gamers think that its storage space is too small, worrying that even at the beginning of the PlayStation 5 life cycle, it seems a little stretched.
According to Computerbase, Sony is developing a new data compression technology that can reduce the game file size by 60%. At least it seems to be a good way to do this, as a compensation measure for 825 GB of storage space. But so far, there are not many things that the outside world can know about Sony’s data compression technology. For the time being, I know what Sony calls this technology, called “Kraken”. According to TechRadar, thanks to this technology, “Control: Ultimate Edition” is only 25.79GB on PlayStation 5, which is 39% less than the 42.5GB on Xbox Series X/S. Twisted Voxel reports that the PlayStation 5 version of “Subnautica ” is only 3.5GB, which saves 60% of the storage space compared to the PlayStation 4 version.
I don’t know if all PlayStation 5 can use these technologies, or if the game needs to optimize the new data compression technology. The ideal situation is of course that in addition to PlayStation 5, even PlayStation 4 or older games can benefit. Normally, game developers do not need to specifically optimize the data compression technology to use it. From a technical perspective, all PlayStation 5 games running on the built-in SSD should support. PlayStation 5 also has a second M.2 slot that can be installed in the future to expand the storage capacity of SSD, but the performance requirements are higher, the new data compression technology should also be applied to the expanded equipment.
At present, the capacity required for a single game is getting larger and larger, and it may double in about three to four years. It is definitely a good thing to have new data compression technology applications. At least gamers can reduce their worries about the storage capacity of the game console. Save more games in the SSD at the same time, instead of being forced to delete some of your favorite games in order to play new games.
