Silicon Motion launches PCIe 4.0 SSD controller SM2268XT
According to previous reports, PCIe 5.0 SSDs are currently on the market. Although the performance is strong, and the sequential read and write speed exceeds 10GB/s, its heat generation cannot be ignored. The noise of the cooling fan of the solid-state drive even exceeds that of the original Intel fan. It is expected that the PCIe 4.0 solid-state drive will occupy the mainstream market for a while. Silicon Motion recently launched the PCIe 4.0 SSD controller SM2268XT and said that the controller provides the best balance of performance, energy efficiency, and reliability, which can meet the user’s demand for higher data throughput.
The size of the SM2268XT controller is 7.7x11mm. It adopts a dual-core Cortex-R8 CPU and supports NVMe 2.0. It is a four-channel controller, each channel supports a 3200MT/s rate, and supports TLC and QLC NAND. In terms of performance, the SM2268XT controller supports a maximum sequential read speed of 7400MB/s, a maximum sequential write speed of 6500MB/s, a maximum random read of 1200K IOPS, and a maximum random write of 1200K IOPS.
The SM2268XT controller supports HMB (Host Memory Buffer) technology, which enables the SSD to improve its performance with the help of the high-speed read and write characteristics of the memory without caching; support NANDXtend ECC technology, combined with LDPC and RAID Data Recovery correction technology, can quickly decode and correct errors.
The controller supports intelligent power management. Solid-state drives usually have five power states from PS0 to PS4. Different power states correspond to different power consumption, and PS0 is in a full-speed operation state. Silicon Motion said that the power consumption of the SM2268XT controller is less than 5mW in the PS3 state, and less than 1.8mW in the PS4 state.
Silicon Motion is currently providing samples of the SM2268XT controller to major customers, and it is expected that SSDs equipped with this controller will be launched in the market after a period of time.
