Samsung releases 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM for smartphones
Samsung announced in February this year that it officially opened 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM based on the 1y process. Samsung introduced that the bandwidth of this memory is as high as 5500Mb/s, which is 1.3 times that of LPDDR4X-4266.
When Samsung announced the mass production news, it also revealed that it will release the 1zprocess 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM in the second half of this year. Now in the second half of the year, it is time for Samsung to release this memory.
Today, Samsung has done what it said and released the world’s first 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM built with the 1z process. This memory will be built using Samsung’s third-generation 10nm-class process and EUV technology.
Samsung said that the 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM built on the 1z process is 16% faster than the 12GB LPDDR5 DRAM built on the 1y process released last year, and the bandwidth has reached the design limit of LPDDR5, which is 6400Mb/s.
It may be a bit abstract to talk about data only. This bandwidth rate can transmit about 10 5GB-sized full-HD movies or other data with a size of about 51.2GB in 1 second.
The new memory based on the 1z process is not only faster than the memory of the 1y process, but also 30% thinner, which can reduce the packaging height of some smartphones, thereby making the phone thinner and allowing the phone to integrate more and larger other elements.
Samsung has not announced when it will launch a 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM built on the 1z process, but it has stated that it will continue to consolidate its flagship smartphone’s flagship position in the market in 2021, so we are expected to see it in 2021.
