Samsung and AMD Extend Strategic IP Licensing Agreement, Bringing AMD’s GPU Technology to Future Mobile Platforms

Samsung and AMD have announced that they have signed a multi-year agreement to bring multiple generations of high-performance, low-power AMD Radeon graphics solutions to Samsung’s Exynos SoC’s expanded portfolio. By extending the authorization, Samsung will bring game-level graphics quality and optimized power consumption to more mobile devices, providing incredible immersive and long-lasting gaming experiences.

The collaboration between Samsung and AMD in the mobile field began in June 2019 when both parties announced a strategic partnership. As part of this agreement, Samsung will receive AMD graphics IP authorization and apply it to mobile platforms, focusing on enhancing critical advanced graphics technologies and solutions on mobile devices, including smartphones.

Samsung launched the Exynos 2200 in 2022, which is equipped with the Xclipse 920 GPU built on the RDNA 2 architecture. It is the industry’s first mobile GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable-rate shading functions. Although the Exynos 2200 was not very successful, it seems to have had no impact on the collaboration between the two parties. There have been previous reports that the two parties will sign a long-term cooperation agreement to further deepen their cooperation.

David Wang, Senior Vice President of Engineering Research and Development at AMD Radeon Technology Business Unit, said he was pleased that Samsung had chosen AMD’s graphics technology to drive its next-generation Exynos solution. The expansion of the collaboration between the two parties demonstrates AMD’s strong technical collaboration and commitment to bringing the best experience to mobile users. Samsung stated that it would continue to promote continuous innovation in the field of mobile graphics using its expertise in designing ultra-low power solutions.
