Nvidia investigates the 12VHPWR interface and wire overheating and melting problem

Recently, users have reported that the 12VHPWR interface of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card and its power supply cable has overheated and melted. From the side, it confirms the concerns of many users before. Due to the excessive pressure on the cable due to bending, the temperature is abnormal and eventually damaged.

The successive events of the same type are definitely not good news for Nvidia. According to Igor’sLAB, Nvidia has notified all partners that damaged graphics cards in similar incidents need to be sent to its headquarters for further failure analysis. This should be the first time Nvidia has taken a similar approach, even after multiple failures of its GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with Micron’s memory chips a few years ago.

Nvidia has confirmed to The Verge that it is actively investigating the matter and has reached out to the user with the issue. “We are investigating the reports,” says Nvidia spokesperson Bryan Del Rizzo in a statement to The Verge. “We are in contact with the first owner and will be reaching out to the other for additional information.” According to the recommendations of the relevant guidelines, the cable should be more than 3.5cm away from the plug before bending.
