Nvidia Grace CPU and Hopper GPU debut on exascale-class supercomputers

Recently, Atos launched the new BullSequana XH3000 hybrid computing platform for the construction of exascale (Exascale/E-class) supercomputers. The new platform has very good compatibility and flexibility and can use CPUs from Intel, AMD, Nvidia, and SiPearl, as well as GPUs from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia. The new platform can handle node cooling issues with power consumption up to 1000W by using a dedicated liquid cooling system.

According to TomsHardware, the BullSequana XH3000 hybrid computing platform provides a flexible solution with performance ranging from 1 FP64 Petaflop to 1 FP64 Exaflop and 10 FP8/FP16 Exaflop for AI applications. In addition to Intel and AMD’s traditional x86 CPUs, Nvidia’s Arm-based Grace CPUs and SiPearl’s Rhea high-performance SoCs are also supported. The new platform also supports next-generation GPUs for data center/high-performance computing (HPC), including AMD’s CDNA 2/3 architecture, Nvidia Hopper GPU, and Intel Ponte Vecchio.
Both CPUs and GPUs for data center/high-performance computing are typically very power-hungry, there is a large amount of heat, so the BullSequana XH3000 hybrid computing platform adopts a special liquid cooling system, which promises to increase the heat dissipation efficiency by more than 50% compared with previous products, and the power consumption of the node can reach 1000W. In addition, the BullSequana XH3000 hybrid computing platform will support multiple network technologies, including BXI, Fast Ethernet, and HDR & NDR InfiniBand.

It is understood that the first batch of BullSequana XH3000 hybrid computing platforms will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2022, which is likely to belong to the first batch of supercomputers using Nvidia Hopper GPU. At present, many solutions for building E-class supercomputing systems use HPE’s Cray EX architecture, the CPU is AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon, and the GPU is generally AMD and NVIDIA products, the BullSequana XH3000 hybrid computing platform provides a more flexible solution.
