MPEG LA sues Samsung Electronics for infringement of patents in HEVC
According to TechPowerup, today MPEG LA has filed a lawsuit in the German state of Landgericht Düsseldorf, accusing Samsung Electronics of infringing patents in the HEVC Patent Portfolio License. This part of the patent is critical to the HEVC (also known as H.265 and MPEG-H Part 2) digital video coding standard for products that encode and decode video for Internet, television, mobile transmission, reception, and use.
MPEG LA refers to Samsung Electronics GmbH’s parent Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. was both Licensor and Licensee to MPEG LA’s HEVC Patent Portfolio License from Fall 2014 until terminating in March 2020. However, since the suspension of the relevant license, Samsung still offers products in Germany including smartphones, tablets, and TVs, and these products use the patented HEVC technology. MPEG LA said that the matter has been handed over to a team of lawyers, including the injunction, monetary compensation, and other costs involved, and seeks to resolve it through legal channels.
