Mozilla will disable Mozilla Voice Proxy Server on February 28
Mozilla recently announced that it will disable the Voice Fill and Voice Beta extensions on Firefox, and will automatically uninstall these extensions from Firefox users on February 19.
Mozilla explained in the announcement that this decision was made after the company decided to deactivate Mozilla Speech Proxy Server. Since the Mozilla Voice Proxy Server provides support for the above two extensions, after disabling the Voice Proxy Server, Mozilla can only choose to also disable these two extensions.
Firefox Voice Fill was launched in July 2017, and Mozilla used it as a pilot project to test whether related functions can be implemented in an extended form without directly being built into the Firefox browser. The launch of this project also laid a solid foundation for a number of subsequent important functions, such as Firefox Containers, Min Vid, and tracking protection.
Firefox Voice Beta was launched in January 2020. It introduced voice control to the Firefox desktop browser. The extension allows users to use voice to control browser functions, such as using voice to search, control media playback, open specific websites, or control browser functions.
Mozilla did not disclose why the Mozilla Voice Proxy Server was disabled. However, the low number of users may be one of the factors. Voice Fill has only 5,800 users in the past 4 years, and Voice Beta has only 11,600 users.
