Microsoft will remove Visual Studio Codespaces
Microsoft announced the launch of the Visual Studio Codespaces code hosting platform at the Build 2019 Global Developers Conference, which is to write code directly on the web editor and save it in Visual Studio Codespaces so that developers can program at any time.
What’s interesting is that at that time, Microsoft also launched Github Codespaces, which is basically similar to Visual Studio Codespaces in function and usage, but belongs to a different product line. But as we all know that Microsoft has already acquired the GitHub platform, is it necessary to launch repetitive products? Microsoft thinks it is unnecessary.
Microsoft has issued an announcement that it will suspend the registration of new Visual Studio Codespaces users, suspension of creation plans and code spaces, and users in Azure services can still connect to existing code spaces through the portal to access data and backups data.
From February 17, 2021, the Visual Studio Codespaces function will be completely closed, all user remaining plans and code space will be deleted, and the Visual Studio Codespaces website will be completely deleted.
Users can migrate all the content and code to Github Codespaces and continue to use it. In fact, most functions and usage habits have not changed. After all, the underlying architecture of the two products is basically the same.
Here’s why Microsoft is killing Visual Studio Codespaces:
During the preview we’ve learned that transitioning from a repository to a codespace is the most critical piece of your workflow and the vast majority of you preferred a richly integrated, native, one-click experience. Since GitHub is the home of 50M developers, it made sense to partner with them to address this feedback. However, after the GitHub-native experience was released, we started hearing that the two distinct experiences were causing confusion amongst our users.
We believe that by consolidating the current Codespaces experiences into one, we can eliminate confusion, simplify the experience for everyone, and make more rapid progress to address customer feedback.
