Micron will build packaging and testing facilities in India
Recently, Micron declared its intentions to establish encapsulation and testing facilities in Gujarat, India, marking its first factory in the country. Micron stated that the new facility would be built in phases, with construction expected to commence within this year. The first phase includes a 500,000 square feet clean room, projected to commence operations by the end of 2024, whereupon production capacity will gradually increase based on global demand trends. The second phase of the project is set to begin after 2025 and will be of a similar scale and possess facilities consistent with the first phase.
Micron’s two-phase investment amounts to a total of 825 million USD, which is expected to generate as many as 5,000 new jobs directly within Micron over the next several years, in addition to 15,000 community job positions. According to the subsidy policy of the Indian government, Micron will receive financial support from the central government of India equivalent to 50% of the total project cost, and a reward equivalent to 20% of the total project cost from Gujarat. This means that the total investment, comprising Micron’s contribution and governmental subsidies, will reach 2.75 billion USD.
Gursharan Singh, Senior Vice President of Micron’s global encapsulation and testing operations, stated that the project is the result of more than a year’s discussions with Indian government officials. The new factory will specialize in converting wafers into Ball Grid Array (BGA) integrated circuit packages, memory modules, and solid-state drives.
