MariaDB announces acquisition of distributed database Clustrix
MariaDB announced yesterday the acquisition of the distributed database Clustrix; the specific acquisition amount has not been disclosed. ClustrixDB is a SQL database with a focus on scalability, supports workloads involving extended transactions and real-time analytics, and built-in fault tolerance for high availability in the cluster.
With this acquisition, MariaDB will increase the scale-out capabilities that run in commodity hardware or cloud environments, with greater scalability and availability than other traditional distributed databases. Also, the acquisition is another investment by MariaDB to advance database innovation further, helping to promote MariaDB Labs’ mission to solve the most extreme challenges in the database space, especially around distributed computing, machine learning, and next-generation silicon, memory and storage environments.
MariaDB, CEO of MariaDB, said, “With Clustrix, MariaDB can provide a better solution for our customers that have challenging scale-out enterprise environments. Our distributed solution will satisfy the most extreme requirements of our largest customers and gives them the freedom to break from Oracle’s lock-in.” However, integrating Clustrix database technology into MariaDB is no easy task. MariaDB must make some changes to its API to prepare for Clustrix’s clustering capabilities.
It is reported that this is the second acquisition of MariaDB this year. The last time in March, the company acquired MammothDB, an enterprise database analysis company, to strengthen its modern analysis solution MariaDB AX and promote its database-as-a-service (DBaaS) strategy.
