Jim Zemlin: Accelerating open source innovation, the Linux Foundation goes beyond Linux
Two days ago we reported on Linus ‘s sharing of Linux success factors at the North American Open Source Summit. Today, I’m looking at what the Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin shared at the conference.
According to DZone, Jim Zemlin said in his opening speech that the Linux Foundation’s job is to create innovative engines and rotate the gears of these engines faster. Projects such as Let’s Encrypt, Automotive Grade Linux, Hyperledger, and the Academic Software Foundation under the Linux Foundation are typical examples of how organisations can drive cross-industry innovation. Jim believes that this accelerated open source innovation is beyond Linux, and it also represents The Linux Foundation is currently at its strongest.
The Linux Foundation is committed to building sustainable ecosystems around open source projects to accelerate technology development and industry adoption. It was established in 2000 to provide support to the open source community through financial and technical resources, infrastructure, services, activities and training. The Linux Foundation initially used its experience and expertise in supporting the Linux community to help build, build, and maintain some of the most critical open source technologies, but today it goes far beyond Linux and promotes innovation at every level of the software stack. Projects hosted by the Linux Foundation cover enterprise IT, embedded systems, consumer electronics, cloud, and networking.
The Linux Foundation will add one member each year, including the current fast-growing CNCF. According to Jim, the success of the project relies on members, developers, standards and infrastructure to produce products that meet market needs, and the Linux Foundation has facilitated this process in some ways. Downstream of the open source industry, the Linux Foundation helps industry, government, and academia understand how to leverage and contribute to open source. At the same time, upstream, it promotes the development and adoption of open source solutions, showing the industry how to create value and generate reinvestment.
