Librem 5 Linux smartphone is shipping to users
The Librem 5 Linux smartphone, which focuses on privacy and security, began shipping on September 24th, but it will be released in batches until Q4 2020. At the same time, Purism launched a 37-second real-time video. During the presentation, Purism demonstrated content such as web browsing, app switching, messaging, contacts, and the PureOS app store. The operational of Librem 5 Linux is very similar to Android.
On the software side, the Librem 5 Linux smartphone uses PureOS based on Debian customization, complemented by a mobile version of the famous GNOME desktop environment. For the convenience of customers, Purism also has a number of built-in applications.
In terms of hardware, the machine is equipped with a 5.7-inch IPS screen display with 720×1440 resolution, an i.MX8M quad-core Cortex A53 64-bit ARM 1.5GHz CPU, support OpenGL / ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.2 and Vulkan graphics API. The Librem 5 Linux smartphone offers 3GB RAM + 32GGB eMMC ROM and supports microSD expansion. On the network side, the machine supports 802.11 a/b/g/n dual-band W-Fi (2.4 / 5GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2.
In other respects, the unit is equipped with GPS and USB 3.0 Type-C, micro-SIM, and memory card slot, and 3500mAh replaceable lithium-ion battery. The Librem 5 Linux smartphone is now available for purchase at the Purism online store for $699. The first delivery deadline is October 22nd.
