LG Revolutionizes Gaming: Adjustable OLED Unveiled
LG has announced the development of the world’s first gaming OLED panel capable of switching refresh rates and resolutions, commencing mass production of the 31.5-inch panel this month. This innovation, a foray into the premium gaming monitor market with a novel concept product, features LG’s proprietary Dynamic Frequency and Resolution (DFR) technology. This allows users to prioritize between refresh rate and resolution by adjusting the image processing speed, marking the first application of this technology in mass-produced panels.
Won-seok Kang, Vice President and Head of Large Display Product Planning at LG Display, stated, “We aim to generate new customer value through differentiated OLED technology, such as perfect blacks, rapid response times, and ultra-high refresh rates, thereby reinforcing our leadership in the high-end gaming monitor market.”
This revolutionary gaming OLED panel enables users to freely choose between a high refresh rate mode (FHD@480Hz) for fast-paced, visually demanding games, such as first-person shooters or racing games, and a high-resolution mode (4K@240Hz) for an immersive experience in movies with rich visual effects or crisp 4K content. Unlike traditional panels, which may allow refresh rate adjustments, resolution remains fixed, thus limiting versatility across different applications.
Additionally, LG has incorporated other technologies into this panel to enhance user experience, including META Technology 2.0 for improved brightness and image quality, and Thin Actuator Sound technology, which allows the screen to emit sound, eliminating the need for speakers. Starting this year, LG plans to expand aggressively into the high-end monitor market with a full lineup of gaming OLED panels ranging from 27 to 45 inches.
For those closely following the gaming monitor market, LG’s 2024 UltraGear OLED gaming monitor, model 32GS95UE, which utilizes this panel, has already launched its presale in domestic markets this month. Furthermore, ASUS’s ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP also features this innovative panel.
