Intel plans to phase out Comet Lake-H with 14nm process
As Intel is about to launch the 12th-generation Core series of mobile processors, some old processors for mobile platforms are about to be phased out. Although it will take some time for Intel’s processor product line to fully transition to the 10nm process, there will undoubtedly be fewer and fewer products using the 14nm process.
Recently, Intel announced that the 10th generation Core mobile standard processor (Comet Lake-H) is no longer in the plan, and related products are still available for orders until 2022. There is no doubt that this is to make way for the upcoming Alder Lake new product. As Intel encountered obstacles at the 10nm process node, it has been unable to popularize the new process, resulting in the 14nm process that has to be adopted for a long time. The die size is larger and the efficiency is not as good as the current new products.
Intel’s decision shows that the 10nm process is gradually on track, and it can release the capacity and space required by other products, simplify the product line, and make it easier for PC manufacturers to purchase and arrange product lines.
About half a year ago, Intel also launched EOL plans for three low-power series products, including the Comet Lake-U series and Ice Lake-U series belonging to the 10th generation Core, and the Lakefield series belonging to the 11th generation Core. These processors are no longer in Intel’s plan and will be phased out gradually. The final shipment date for different models is between April and July 2022.
