Intel plans to auction modem patents for the smartphone business and completely exit from the market
Earlier, Apple and Qualcomm suddenly announced a settlement before the patents lawsuit. After the settlement, Apple will continue to use Qualcomm-produced modems and of course, abandon Intel. For Apple, Intel’s reliability and R&D progress can’t wait. So, Apple is not willing to continue to pull Intel against Qualcomm. Intel’s end result is the complete withdrawal of the modem business for smartphones.
According to the latest report released by AndroidAuthority, Intel is cutting off all links with the smartphone modem market and plans to auction its patents. With Apple ending its cooperation with Intel, Intel has no incentive to continue research and development, so Intel is ready to completely abandon its smartphone modem. The auction is divided into a combination of cellular and connected devices, in which the cellular includes 6,000 patents related to 3G/4G/5G cells and 1,700 patents implemented by wireless technology. The connected device portfolio consists primarily of more than 500 patents related to semiconductors and other electronic products, and the auction is represented by Nader Mousavi of Sullivan & Cromwell.
The auction is mainly for technology patents for the smartphone business, and of course, includes the 5G technology that Intel invested heavily in for Apple. However, the auction is auctioned off, but Intel itself still has quite a lot of 5G network assets and patents, because Intel is also preparing to make efforts in the Internet of Things market. Intel said that the company will continue to provide such products in the IoT market. It is expected that the auction will begin next month.
