The global market research organization TrendForce recently released a report stating that under the influence of various negative factors such as customer inventory adjustments, the total revenue of the world’s top ten IC design companies in the third quarter of 2022 came to $37.38 billion, a decrease of 5.3% from the previous quarter.
Qualcomm ranked first among IC design companies in the third quarter of 2022, with revenue of $9.904 billion, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 5.6%, and a market share of 26.5%. Qualcomm’s mobile phone processor and 5G modem chip sales increased in the second quarter, coupled with the expansion of cooperation between the automotive sector and the industry, the revenue of the two major product sectors increased by 6.8% and 22.0% month-on-month respectively, making up for the decline in the revenue of RF front-end chips.
Broadcom’s revenue in the third quarter of 2022 will be $6.936 billion, surpassing Nvidia and AMD, and ranking second. Broadcom’s sales of semiconductor solutions in the third quarter performed well, superimposed on the stable demand of the high-end network market, and its revenue in the third quarter increased by 6.8% quarter-on-quarter. At present, Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware is still under review. If approved, the revenue ranking is expected to rise to first place.
NVIDIA’s revenue in the third quarter was US$6.093 billion, a decrease of 14% from the previous quarter, ranking third. Although Nvidia’s data center and automotive businesses have both grown, it is still difficult to make up for the revenue impact of weak demand for graphics cards caused by the cold mining market. The business of game applications and professional visualization solutions decreased by 32.6% and 44.5% month-on-month, respectively.
AMD ranked fourth with revenue of US$5.565 billion in the third quarter, a decrease of 15% from the previous quarter. AMD also saw for the first time that the revenue related to data center solutions exceeded the revenue related client solutions
According to TrendForce, due to the limited rebound in consumer electronics brought about by the end-of-year shopping festival, and the high inventory on the consumer side still needs time to digest, therefore, from the fourth quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of 2023, the revenue of IC design companies may still decline quarter-on-quarter.
