Graphics card sales hit a record low in 2022

According to the latest GPU market data statistics report released by Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the GPU shipments (including integrated and discrete graphics cards) used in PCs in the fourth quarter of 2022 were 64.2 million, a decrease of 15.4% compared to the previous quarter and a decrease of 38% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the sales volume of desktop discrete graphics cards in the fourth quarter of 2022 was about 7.43 million units, an increase of 7.8% compared to the previous quarter, but a decrease of 43.7% compared to the same period last year, slightly higher than the 6.81 million units in the third quarter.

Although AMD’s share of desktop discrete graphics cards increased slightly from 10% to 11% in the fourth quarter of 2022, it still showed a significant decline compared to the same period in 2021, with a shipment volume of 800,000 units, one of its worst quarterly performances ever. In contrast, NVIDIA occupies 84% of the market share, while Intel has 5%. Although the new flagship GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card is expensive, its performance is exceptional, subverting the industry’s understanding of the economy and market behavior.

Throughout 2022, the shipment volume of desktop discrete graphics cards was 37.86 million units, a significant decrease compared to 49.15 million in 2021. This number is also the lowest in history, far from the peak of 116 million in 1998. NVIDIA maintained strong shipments, reaching 30.34 million units, and snatching a large share of the market from AMD, whose annual shipment volume remained around 10 million from 2019 to 2021, but fell to 6.76 million in 2022. AMD’s poor performance may have other factors, such as focusing on other product lines.

In 2021, the desktop discrete graphics card market was worth $51.8 billion, with an average selling price of $1,056. Due to the significant decrease in the shipment volume of desktop discrete graphics cards in 2022, the market size also decreased by $24.14 billion, with an average selling price (ASP) of $637. However, Jon Peddie Research predicts that the desktop discrete graphics card market will grow by 7% in the next three years.
