Google’s AI chatbot was supposed to launch in the EU
Originally, Google had scheduled the European Union launch of its artificial intelligence chatbot, “Bard.” However, due to regulatory demands for comprehensive privacy policies, the company has chosen to delay the bot’s deployment.
The Deputy Commissioner of Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), Graham Doyle, stated that because Google only recently informed the agency about its plans, without furnishing thorough explanations and data protection plans, the tech giant has been requested to complete the relevant documents. Furthermore, Google has been asked to postpone the provision of “Bard” services within the EU.
In response, Google confirmed its decision to delay the introduction of “Bard” services in the EU region. The company also promised to cooperate with the regulatory authorities’ investigation and work towards resolving any relevant issues. Currently, the European Union is also beginning to draft regulations pertaining to artificial intelligence. Therefore, AI applications including “Bard” could potentially be impacted.
Previously, OpenAI’s ChatGPT service faced a temporary ban in Italy due to concerns about collecting personal data from minors and children. The prohibition was lifted only after alterations were made to the service’s operation. Simultaneously, several countries including Germany, Spain, and Ireland are prepared to intervene and investigate whether current AI technology is affecting users’ personal data.
