Google will lay off about 12,000 jobs

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently published a blog post titled “A difficult decision to set us up for the future” and announced that about 12,000 employees will be laid off in the Google team, including Google and its parent company Alphabet, accounting for about 6% of the total number of employees.

While the exact number of layoffs in each country was not disclosed, U.S. employees are expected to bear the brunt of the hit, followed by some international employees. Google has sent a separate email to affected U.S. employees, while in other countries, due to local legal restrictions, it will take longer. In view of the recent downturn in the global economic environment and the downward trend in the technology industry, many technology companies have chosen to lay off employees to cope with the new economic situation.

Sundar Pichai said that in the past two years, he has seen substantial growth, but the current economic situation is different. Google conducts a rigorous review of product areas and functions to confirm that people and roles match its highest priorities as a company. Sundar Pichai also stated that he takes full responsibility for the decisions that led to the status.

It is understood that Google’s layoffs cover technology, product, human resources, and other departments. For the affected US employees this time, Google will continue to pay employees during the entire notice period (minimum 60 days), provide severance pay with a starting salary of 16 weeks and pay bonuses in 2022, and unused vacations will also be in cash discounted.
