Google officially launched Fuchsia OS
Fuchsia, a new-generation operating system that Google has developed for a long time, has begun to run on the first-generation Nest Hub. Starting today, an update will be rolled out to the first-generation Nest Hub users. This update will not change any features of the Nest Hub, but the smart display will run the Fuchsia operating system instead of the Linux-based “Cast OS” it used before. In fact, the user experience of Nest Hub should not change, because Google’s smart display experience is built with Flutter, and Flutter is designed to continuously bring applications to multiple platforms, including Fuchsia.
The Fuchsia-based Nest Hub update will be rolled out for users in the preview program in the next few months, and the interface and experience will remain unchanged. By conducting field tests on real devices, Google can prove that their “non-Linux” operating system from scratch is ready to be used as an alternative to the Cast operating system in smart homes. At this time, it’s unclear whether Google plans to port other Cast OS-based devices to Fuchsia.
In general, a smart home is just one of the many ways Google has explored for Fuchsia. The operating system is also designed to be used on desktops and smartphones and even natively run Android applications. As Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer said in 2019, the smart home may be the starting point for Fuchsia on Made by Google devices.
