When the supply of graphics cards is in short supply, due to the lack of various components, individual manufacturers use GPUs used in mobile platforms to manufacture discrete graphics cards for desktop platforms in order to meet market demand. This kind of thing is not new, it has happened before. Recently,
BullsLab Jay tested a GeForce RTX 3060M desktop graphics card to see what is the performance difference compared to the regular
GeForce RTX 3060.
GeForce RTX 3060M desktop graphics card and the general desktop platform GeForce RTX 3060 are different in TDP, the former is generally 115W, and the latter is 170W, however, the GeForce RTX 3060M desktop graphics card that BullsLab Jay got is locked at 80W, and the number of CUDA cores is 3840, which is higher than the 3584 of the GeForce RTX 3060. Another point, the GeForce RTX 3060M desktop graphics card has 6GB of GDDR6 memory, which is less than the GeForce RTX 3060.
The GPU codename of the GeForce RTX 3060M desktop graphics card is GN20-E3, which is consistent with the mobile platform. Previously, a major use of this type of graphics card was the cryptocurrency, because the mobile version of the GPU did not have the limit of LHR, but as the market weakened, this type of graphics card can now be seen more in the second-hand market. The GeForce RTX 3060M desktop graphics card also lacks official drivers and can only use custom drivers based on version 512.15.
From the test results, the performance of the GeForce RTX 3060M desktop graphics card is good, very close to the GeForce RTX 3060. Since there is no official support, the cooling system and PCB design are relatively simple, and it is likely to be a second-hand graphics card and lack of after-sales guarantee, with the current graphics card market, it is not a good choice to buy this type of graphics card.
